Container canopy load ratings: what BS EN 13782 and BS 6399 certification means for your site

When an Engineering Lead signs off a container canopy for a long-term or permanent deployment, the structural question matters more than the purchase price. Wind loading, snow loading, and exposed-site performance determine whether a structure holds up over years of use. Shield Canopy is tested to three standards: BS EN 13782:2005, BS 6399-2:1997, and BS 6399-3:1988. This article explains what each means in practical site terms.

What the certifications mean for a container canopy

BS EN 13782:2005 is a European standard for temporary structures. It covers safety requirements across design, calculation, manufacture, installation, and maintenance of mobile, temporarily installed structures. For a container canopy, this means the structure has been calculated and tested against defined design actions rather than assembled to a general specification.

BS 6399-2:1997 is the British Standard code of practice for wind loads on buildings, setting out the method for calculating gust peak wind loads on structures and their components. BS 6399-3:1988 covers imposed roof loads, including snow. Both were calibrated for UK site conditions.

Shield Canopy is engineered and tested to all three. Wind loading is certified to 500 N/m² across all width variants: the 8m, 10m, and 12.2m configurations. That is equivalent to 63.85 mph, Beaufort 10. Snow loading is certified to 600 N/m² on the 8m and 10m widths, and 420 N/m² on the 12.2m width. Drifted snow loadings are certified at 1,200 N/m² and 840 N/m² respectively.

What Beaufort 10 means in practice

Beaufort 10 is classified as a storm: 63.85 mph, the point at which trees are uprooted and considerable structural damage occurs to conventional buildings. For an Engineering Lead specifying a container canopy on an exposed industrial or commercial site, certification to this level means the structure has been calculated to hold under conditions that would cause failures in under-specified alternatives.

The shipping containers the canopy spans serve a structural function beyond storage. They act as the anchor and base for the framework. The certification accounts for anchor point loads and container ballasting requirements. Both are covered in the Shield Pre-Installation Guide, which McGregor supplies with every order and which is available on request via the Shield Canopy product page.

Container canopy performance: Larkhill Barracks and Bell Equipment

At Larkhill Barracks in Wiltshire, the Shield Canopy MS-12 was installed as a demonstration structure for visiting departments of the British Army, identified by the Department for International Trade and the MOD as a critical export opportunity. The requirement was a structure that a military construction team could assemble, deconstruct, and redeploy within 24 hours, in exposed conditions, while protecting vehicles including battle tanks and personnel carriers during maintenance. Certification to BS EN 13782:2005 and BS 6399 was part of the technical basis for MOD acceptance.

At Bell Equipment in Burton-on-Trent, a multi-bay Shield Canopy was deployed across three 40ft containers for vehicle maintenance on articulated dump trucks used in earth moving and quarrying. The 12.2m width gives 6.16 metres of clearance height and now provides year-round operational continuity for the engineering team.

Specifying a container canopy for your site

Structural certification answers the sign-off question. The site-specific variables, container positioning, ground conditions, prevailing wind direction, and any access or height clearance requirements, need to be resolved before a configuration can be confirmed. A site survey covers all of these and produces the specification the purchasing team needs.

Shield Canopy is held in stock across all width variants. Once containers are in position, installation is completed within 48 hours. The Shield Pre-Installation Guide and full structural calculations are supplied with every order.
