Newlay Asphalt Optimises Production with Opus
Explore how Opus reduced moisture, cutting costs, and enhancing material management for Newlay Asphalt.
As demand for asphalt surged in 2022, Newlay Asphalt expanded its operations with a new production plant. With increased output came a greater need for raw materials, particularly recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). To optimise efficiency and reduce costs, they partnered with Opus to create a purpose-built dry storage solution.
Wet aggregates require pre-heating before use, increasing energy consumption. By keeping RAP dry, Opus minimised the need for pre-heating, leading to significant cost savings. Designed for maximum ventilation, its open-front structure ensured easy access for machinery while promoting airflow to prevent condensation. An engineered air vent further enhances circulation without compromising water resistance, thanks to the inbuilt guttering system.
Given the UK’s rainy climate, Opus offers superior protection against moisture. Its rounded canopy design ensures effective water runoff, preventing moss, leaves, and excess moisture buildup—issues common in traditional buildings.
Opus, in collaboration with RSG Structures Ltd, provided Newlay Asphalt with a highly efficient storage asset that enhances material management, improves productivity, and delivers long-term operational savings.

Main Features
Why Newlay Asphalt chose Opus
Modular
Opus can be specified as a single or multi-bay structure. The modular design allows an existing building to be joined to an established structure with low effort and reduced investment - aggregate storage bays can be easily added as a site expands.

Safely Constructed
By offering specific product sizes, our teams install the same structures repeatedly with little variation, meaning our construction process is safe and predictable, and the ongoing maintenance of every structure can be effectively carried out.

Dry Environment
Opus forms a protective environment with features that control moisture. A gable vent with integrated water management maintains airflow. A tensioned side skirt forms a waterproof barrier, and where multi-bay structures connect, a deep-section steel gutter manages rainwater to on-site drainage.

Protection
Opus is engineered for strength and longevity. Specified and tested for wind and snow loadings to European standards BS 6399-2:1997 & BS 6399-3:1988 2. BS EN 13782:2005. The framework is constructed from 76.2mm MagnaTube steel, creating a robust, hard-wearing aggregate storage bay

OPUS Covered bays for Aggregate Industries
Aggregate Industries turned to McGregor Group to create covered aggregate storage bays that provide the ideal sheltered spaces for ensuring efficient asphalt production.
